It’s officially the winter season. With cold and inclement weather here for the foreseeable future, it’s important to keep an especially close eye on the road while you’re driving. Snow, ice and other winter-related road hazards can make it difficult to navigate certain roads, both in terms of visibility and traction.
This blog will cover recommended precautions to take before you brave the winter roads with your vehicle.
Driving Through Snow and Ice
The obvious road hazards during the winter are snow and ice. They both hinder the traction of car tires and can cause serious accidents if cars are moving too fast or recklessly. A good tip for traction is to assess it while you’re out on the road. A good way to do this is to ensure there are no cars around you, then lightly apply the brakes while you’re driving in a straight line down a road. If your car doesn’t brake properly, you will need to adjust your driving to adjust for the conditions. This usually means slowing down and keeping adequate distance between you and other vehicles.
When you see ice on the road, you’ll know to avoid it or drive especially slow over it. However, black ice can be especially dangerous because it can be nearly impossible to see, especially at night. If you do hit a patch of black ice, stay calm and try not to overact. It’s best to let your vehicle pass over the ice while trying to keep the steering wheel straight and not hitting the brakes.
Safe Driving Tips
Besides being especially cautious when driving over snow and ice, there are many other items of note to consider while driving on the roads this winter. The following are some things to consider:

Carry emergency supplies. Keeping nonperishable food, water, blankets and flashlights in your vehicle are important to have in case an unexpected break down occurs.

Maintain a full tank of gas. Getting stuck in the snow with no gas is dangerous during the winter, so filling up your car when it is half empty is a good precaution to take.

Look out for wild game. Just like any time of year, deer and other animals can come out of nowhere while you’re driving, so keep an eye out—especially at dawn and dusk. Be especially vigilant in areas where there are signs indicating their presence.

Keep adequate windshield washer fluid. It’s tough to drive when your windshield is covered with snow, sleet or ice, so keep windshield wipers in good working condition. Make sure you have the antifreeze standard windshield washer fluid so it doesn’t freeze in cold conditions.
